Famous NamesThrough out the clubs 40 year association with the G.A.A. in New South Wales it has hosted a large number of current and former inter county players. Current club veteran Dec Rooney starred as a dual player for Laois in the 90's. Tyrones All Ireland winners Brian McGuigan and Kevin Hughes both togged out for the club in 2005 with Brian going onto win his second of three All Irelands that September. Diarmuid Duggan the current Cork right back pulled on the Young Ireland jersey in 2007 and in 2008 narrowly missed out on an All Ireland Final place when Cork were beaten by Kerry in the semi finals. 2008 was also a very proud year for ths club with our own Brian Deane aka Deano being voted in as president of the New South Wales G.A.A. Since he has stepped down from the position in 2009 all the members of the club are eagerly anticipating his return to the squad and another dusting off of his rocket left leg. | |
State Team RepresentationYoung Irelands have had a strong tradition of producing quality players. This becomes very evident every year when October comes around and the panel for the state games are announced. Young Irelands always have a very strong representation on the panel and if it wasn't for the strange visa restrictions governing team selection there is no doubt that our tally of players with state team caps would be much larger. The top picture on the right is from the N.S.W. v Kerry match in 1981. Young Ireland had a very strong presence on this squad that ran the 4 in a row All Ireland champions close. Current team manager Tommy Joe Johnson is standing proudly in the back row second from the left. To the right of the picture can be seen legendary full forward for Kerry Eoin 'Bomber' Liston. In the picture below from 1991 Tommy Joe can also be seen but this time standing not so proudly and 11 from the left in the back row. Tommy also togged out in the 2007 State Games for N.S.W. as player/manager and scored a cracker of a goal from all of 30 yards. Now there's an example oflongevity The lower picture is from the State Games 2005 in Brisbane. Young Ireland had 11 representatives from 20 on this squad, something un matched by any of the states other clubs. Tommy Joe can be seen standing on the extreme right of the middle row. |
